What is Bazi? 八字

八字 literally means 'eight characters.' It is a Chinese system based entirely on your birth date and time — producing four pairs of characters that map your life's energy pattern.

The core idea

Every moment in time has an energetic quality — a specific configuration of the five elements. You were born into a particular moment, so you carry that energy pattern for life. Bazi doesn't predict what will happen to you. It maps who you are, what tendencies you carry, and what kinds of periods in life will feel supportive or challenging.

What Bazi is used for
  1. Personality & self-understandingYour Day Master (the central character) describes your core nature — how you think, relate, and operate under pressure.
  2. Career & talent mappingThe chart shows which types of work, environments, and roles align with your natural energy.
  3. Wealth & resourcesSpecific stars in the chart indicate your relationship with money, earning style, and financial capacity.
  4. RelationshipsThe spouse palace and relationship stars reveal partnership dynamics and what you need in a partner.
  5. Life timing10-year luck pillars and annual energy tell you which periods are expansive and which call for patience.
"Bazi is not fortune-telling. It is a map — not the territory. The same chart can play out very differently depending on the choices a person makes. Think of it as understanding your instrument before you play it."
How old is it?

The system developed over roughly 1,000 years in China, formalized during the Tang and Song dynasties (7th–13th century). The most influential classical text, 子平真诠 (Zi Ping Zhen Quan), was written during the Qing dynasty. The system is still widely used across China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and increasingly worldwide.
